As I mentioned in another post, these library shelf labels were a game changer for my media center. They did so much to brighten up the shelves, create easy-to-see sections, and aide students in locating books that it’s almost crazy to think how easy it was! They are also one of the first things people comment on when they come to tour the library!
I had found tons of old magazine files and recycled them by using them with this project. If you don’t have any magazine files hanging around, they can be pretty inexpensive to purchase. A set of 24 costs around $30 on Amazon (about 3.75″ thick) or IKEA has magazine files (3.5″ thick) for just under $30 that might also work . If you use the U/V combo and the X/Y/Z combo, 24 magazine files would be enough for the whole Fiction section.

I printed out these labels and laminated them before attaching them to the magazine files. This change has made one of the biggest differences in the media center. Not only does it update the space with color, but it makes the sections easy to see. For example, I often direct students to look in the “K” section for Diary of A Wimpy Kid. They can see the alphabet easily and I can see if they are in the right area from across the room.
